Phnom Penh – On Friday 30th August 2013, each of the six departments of Don Bosco Technical School was represented by the two hundred and fifty-one students graduating: Mechanical-Welding – 48, Automotive – 46, Electricity – 60, Electronic – 53, Computer -26 and Printing – 18. Dedicated to teaching and guiding the most disadvantaged youth of Cambodia, the Salesian Priests and Brothers, along with the DBTS teachers and volunteers, were there to congratulate and celebrate the students’ achievements; this day marking the completion of their two-year vocational course.
In the lead up to their graduation, Second Year students at DBTS undertake ‘Supervised In-Plant Training’, a 3-month work program, by which they gain hands-on experience in the Cambodian workforce. This training program takes many months of preparation from the Job Placement Officer, TVET In-charge and Department Managers, who create partnerships with local companies, finding every student a place to practice and further develop their vocational skills. Having finished their SIPT, it is clear that the students are confident with their knowledge and skills, possessing a quiet exuberance as they can now support themselves, and financially contribute to their families. Upon completion of their SIPT, the majority of students are employed on a full-time basis in the same company, this large-scale job support program being quite unique in Cambodia.
The ceremony commenced with an opening speech from the Rector, Fr. Roel Soto, SDB, followed by guest speaker and Director General of the Technical Vocational Educational and Training Department, His Excellency Laov Him. Both speakers emphasized the importance of living up to the slogan of DBTS: Knowledge, Virtues and Ingenuity.
For two years the DBTS students have studied their chosen fields, as well as received a formation that encourages critical thinking, creativity and living life as part of a community; all things that are integral to the development of Cambodia and the legacy of Saint John Bosco. The students at Don Bosco Technical School leave not only with a technical qualification, but also with the Salesian values of Knowledge, Virtues and Ingenuity.
As they each received their certificates, the students demonstrated a sense of pride in their achievement and hope for their future. Together, students and staff sang the official Don Bosco School song one last time, the words bitter sweet, as the graduates said goodbye making room for a new group of promising students.
Thank you to the Fathers, Brothers, DBTS staff, volunteers, partners and sponsors; without you this education and formation would not be possible. And finally, Congratulations Class of 2013! May you continue your life journey with the spirit of Don Bosco.
For the twenty-first batch of graduating students of Don Bosco Technical School Phnom Penh, the annual Graduation Ceremony not only signifies the end, but the beginning of a new chapter.
